‘My only distraction as a child was loafing.’
Sempé was born on August 17, 1932 in Bordeaux.
He started working at the Collè Moderne de Bordeaux after being expelled for breaking the rules due to a rather bad school life. He has held a variety of jobs, including Jack-of-all-trades with a wine broker, tutor at a school break camp, and office work. Then, at the age of 18, he decided to go to Paris, touring the editorial offices and selling his first painting in 1951 to the newspaper Sud Ouest. That meeting with Goscinny marked the beginning of a career as a newspaper cartoonist.
In 1962, his first collection of paintings, ‘Rien n’est simple (Nothing is simple)’ appeared, followed by about 30 paintings. Mysterious masterpieces beautifully reflect his ironic gaze at the flaws of the world, and he is now delighting millions of readers as one of the cover cartoonists of the highly prestigious American magazine ‘New Yorker’.
